Top Things to do in Colombo

Although many consider Colombo to be a short stopover before heading on to different parts of Sri Lanka, the commercial capital of the country is in itself a treasure trove of lankanisms, thrills and spills. It is a convergence point for many races, religions and cultures, and the words melting pot do not begin to describe the diversity found in its numbered environs.

Here’s our list of the must dos while in the capital.

  • A Double Decker City Tour
Take a half day from your itinerary and hop on the open double decker bus of the Colombo City Tour, and travel in style while discovering the gems of the city.
  • Experience Peace in the City
Visit the Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple and the Seemamalakaya, and learn about Buddhist culture in Sri Lanka and the foreign influences, or take a short drive down to Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, and say a prayer before the giant sacred Bo Tree.
  • Take a Tuk-Tuk Ride
Michael Schumacher is given a run for his money when these three wheelers take to the road. Enjoy a little open air tour around the city, and make sure you hold on for dear life.
  • Stroll through Victoria Park

  • Sample Kotthu Rotti

  • Sink a Putt at the Royal Colombo Golf Club
With a rich history spanning over 130 years, play a round of golf at the impeccably maintained RCGC, and make sure to enjoy some of the sumptuous fare afterwards at the Clubhouse.
  • Jog Around Independence Square
Join hordes of locals as they flock to Independence Square in the evenings for a casual stroll or a good round of sweating.
